I once was on a Super Shuttle airport van excursion from LAX to some destination within the greater Los Angeles area. The driver was chatty and, as we crept along the highway near El Segundo, he informed me of the origin of the city’s name. El Segundo means “the second” in Spanish, as in one that follows the first and precedes the third. The city’s site was the second of Chevron’s (then Standard Oil) refineries. Funny the things we are incapable of remembering in contrast to those we are incapable of forgetting.
